The trailer for this documentary, Speakeasy, makes me wish I had a stage to lecture on right now! At 9pm on a Wednesday in Los Feliz, in lieu of a podium I’m writing this for all of you…
Public Speaking is the #1 fear people admit to in many nationwide polls. As Jerry Seinfeld explains, coming in second place on surveys is the fear of a little thing called Death.
The Toastmasters attack public speaking from every angle, helping those who dread it most to compete in absolute earnest at a public speaking World Championship match.
Expressing yourself clearly and in all circumstances is absolutely key to feng shui-ing your life! If you’d rather eat glass than speak in front of a group: Watch it.
I found a local Toastmasters group through a friend back in March and added the meeting times to my iCal calendar the same day. It took me another six months before attending my first one. Six months to muster the courage and make the weekly commitment.
Just watching the video above is nerve-wracking. It’s so easy to identify with the the ones choking on their words.
You may be the type who can run a marathon without training, or riff off a 20 minute monolog in front of a 100 people without breaking a sweat. But for the rest of us, just seeing week-to-week progress by gaining control over the nervous energy, hearing your voice become stronger and steadier, and delivering a message that others benefit from brings new meaning to the word rewarding.
Each time I face the challenge, prepare adequately, and present to a group of people who want me to succeed, it gets a little easier. Far easier than running a marathon, that’s for sure. With some of the same cardio-vascular benefits to boot!
